"Empowering Differences: Leveraging Difference to Impact Change"
is a self-help book written by author, Ashley T Brundage.
I started reading this book because it was selected as the February book of the month in a book club that I am active in. To be honest, I did not know at first what I would get out of this book. I couldn't tell right away what separated this one from all the rest. But, it was on the list! And I pride myself on being someone who at the very least, makes every effort to keep my word.
Being someone who comes from a fairly privileged lifestyle, I was not sure how I could relate to the content, I admittedly was concerned that I may open the book to feel attacked by things that were out of my control. I was skeptical that there would be any practical advice for me. But I decided to keep an open mind.
I ordered the book from the author's website, and selected "signed copy" Why not? I do not own many author-signed copies of books. I am so so glad that I did for this one.
The note inside was heartfelt, genuine, and made me feel extremely appreciated as a reader.
It reads as follows:
"Kiera,
Thanks so much for your purchase direct [from her website] as it is very empowering for me and my business. Excited for you to dive into the 4-step process of empowering differences, and connect this to all the leadership you can!
-Ashley"
Of course, I saw that note only after I opened the package and was stunned by the beautiful cover art. It seems simple at first, but if you hold it just right, the cover almost shimmers and looks like a beautiful night sky. (To me at least).
The book is set up in 4 parts, 20 chapters on What it takes to recognize the differences you have with others, and how to utilize them. Particularly if you are doing so in a career setting.
But it does not even read like a typical self-help book. "Empowering Differences" is written in a humorous, genuine style that reads as easily as fiction, and is truly enjoyable to read. The connection you have with the author from the beginning is like sitting down and having a cup of coffee with a friend. (I can't tell you the number of times I sent an 'air hug' through the universe to this amazing human.)
And, it is so much more than that.
This book challenges you to think critically about yourself, your position in life, where you are going, and who you are taking with you. This book easily explains through story-telling concepts that are so simple, but so deep when put to use.
This book changes your thinking, and if it didn't change you life, you were not reading it. I would recommend this book to any person on the planet. Because anyone, I mean anyone can benefit from reading it.
My copy has many many passages highlighted, and I have taken extensive notes. Both by hand, and in the PDF version of the workbook that accompanies it. I look forward to reading the book again, and putting these strategies to use in my daily life.
